Animal "Rizz"

Pheromones, or the smells released from animals, can be used as a form of communication. It can even help bring couples together and eventually lead to the creation of families. It’s a powerful part of the attraction between animals. Usually, this trend is seen with mammals and insects such as fruit flies.

Now, you may be thinking that these smells can only be detected at short distances. However, male silkworm moths are able to smell their wives up to several kilometers away. Also, pheromones can have multiple roles within a community. For example, in bee colonies, the queen produces smells that help to keep its home stable and secure. The pheromones can help the queen call servants to attend to her everyday needs, get potential mates, and prevent any other females from stealing her boyfriends by restricting the growth of certain parts of their bodies. So, the queen bee makes sure that all the men have their sights set only on her. That’s pretty romantic if you ask me.

Pheromones can also be used for other purposes beyond trying to get a husband, or in the queen bee’s case, an entire army of husbands. They can be used to warn other animals about threats and dangers. For instance, if a catfish or minnow gets hurt, they can tell other catfishes and minnows about their injuries through substances oozed from their skin. This can result in the other animals getting to safety as fast as they can, such as by swimming to the bottom of the lake. This process can actually help save their lives.

  1. I liked how you were able to simplify a relatively complicated topic. I also liked your use of the second person, which made this blog post seem a lot more conversational and fun to read than the textbook.

  2. As someone who really doesn't like learning about biology, I thought this was a really good and fun explanation of the topic. I especially liked the part where you talked about the queen bee in a really informal way, it was pretty funny.
